Debussy’s The Fall of the House of Usher

Composer Claude Debussy composed several pieces based on literature. One example is his only opera Pelléas et Méllisande based on Maurice Maeterlinck’s play. More relevant to us, is the fact that he began work on two operas based on Poe’s work. Le diable dans le beffroi (based on the satiric The Devil in the Belfry) was never finished and neither was La chute de la maison Usher (The Fall of the House of Usher). He worked on the latter 1912–1917. Listen to a part of it here:

Katharsis through music

One of my all time favourite musicians, Diamanda Galas, here with the song Sono L’Antichristo (It. I am the Antichrist). It is part of a trilogy of albums about the AIDS-epidemic, in which she criticizes the Roman Catholic church for failing to take action against the disease.

Diamanda Galas has featured in a number of movie scores, including Francis Ford Coppola’s Dracula.
